As any consumer who’s in the market for a new television can tell you, not all televisions are created equally. The variables that you have to keep track of can seem somewhat overwhelming to the uninformed elderly buyer, and include picture quality, flatness, resolution, size, sound and, of course, price.
There is also the question whether to buy plasma, LCD, or the newcomer on the block LED. To be precise, LED is actually an enhanced LCD screen that uses light-emitting diode. Generally speaking, LEDs enhance the clarity of the picture itself because it produces a brighter image with deeper contrasts and blacks than traditional LCDs. The picture enhancement should appeal to seniors with inferior eye-site. For additional information on the differences between plasma, LCD, and LED check out the ElderGadget overview.

If you planning for yourself or someone else, consider these tips:
- Don’t wait. It’s always easier to go through everything when you or the benefactor is in good health.
- Donate items now to enjoy the benefits of the tax write-off.
- Go through belongings and old photos. Write the names of people on the back of each photo so everyone will know who’s who.
- Find out what heirs want. Don’t assume whats invaluable to you will be a treasure for them.

Seniors who choose to live at home independently often have to make the home more accessible. But be careful on the equipment you select. For example grab bars, not all are created equal. The No. 1 mistake people make is buying cheap grab bars, which do not support the weight of the person. A good grab bar should cost $60 – $80. If you are considering the options of replacing the steps with a ramp – using a wood overlay on top of concrete costs $1,000 – $2,000 versus a compete concrete redo which could cost as much as $8,000.
